I spent the summer of 2021 growing 1/6th an acre of grain in the Hudson Valley. I proceeded to harvest, thresh, and winnow the grains by hand. This is a clip from an 11-hour video of me hand-threshing one of the varieties I grew, an ancient grain called emmer, which is wrapped in a very stubborn husk. This is customarily done using heavy machinery or, historically, beasts of burden. The resulting flour was barely enough to make two 6-inch loaves of bread. This piece was shown at Beeler Gallery in 2021.
